And one more thing - (you've really got me going now Adam) - most international travelers have had this experience, and I *know* that I'm pointing out the obvious...

After being in Europe or Asia for a week or so, I step off the plane in [name a major US city] and everyone is fat.

Whereas in Europe or Asia, "normal" body size is the norm (as it should be), fat is the norm in the states. I don't know when this happened, but our perception of what is normal has certainly shifted.

Adam,

Thanks for posting that very nice video – watching it now. I don't see a reference, can you put that video in context?

Thanks for that, Charlie. I wonder, with some fear in the thought, how many people are actually influenced by that kind of advertising. Probably far too many but I'd like to think very few. If you have a chance watch the video I posted after seeing your link.

The Corn Refiners Association fights back! I hate it when the big guys with the money try to force feed us something that they've got to know is wrong. Reminds me of cigarettes in the 60's and 70's.

That's an amazing part of the equation isn't it?! The Japanese use it for sweetening ice coffee but beyond that and a few cakes etc found in the convenient store it hasn't made it's way into Japanese cuisine like it has in the US. If you ask me, it is cause for concern as you have undoubtedly noticed if you are trying to not consume any. Drink options at most BBQ's water or beer and even then we have to read the labels.

Thanks for checking out the site, Pete. I'll try to keep it up to date.

It's ironic, given your introductory paragraph, that, as stated later in the article, high fructose corn syrup was invented/perfected in Japan! My family and I have just begun to notice how high fructose corn syrup is in everything, and at least we Americans are trying to make better choices. By the way, I just discovered this site of yours and it's great!

Adam, I couldn't agree more. A nutrition-conscious coworker brought the high fructose corn syrup issue to my attention a few years ago and I am astonished still at how difficult it is to find food without it! I've become an avid label-reader (I also try to avoid partially hydrogenated oils) and it has really changed the way I look at things. I've even gotten my parents into checking this stuff out.

Next step: getting food companies to change the way they do things! The cheapest foods tend to be the least healthy, so there is a huge population of people who are getting their "nutrition" with a high dose of chemicals and sugar. Grrr!!

So far I've found one yogurt brand (Stonyfield Farm) that does not have high fructose corn syrup in it. In-sanity.

Trader Joe's does a pretty good job, but people shouldn't have to go to a (let's face it) yuppie grocery store in order to eat healthily and provide affordable options for their families.

These chemicals and extra sugars are starting to creep their way into France as well--I'm noticing it more and more here. Eeeeeeeek.

Hope your trip was great--where are you now?

Talk to you soon--just had to comment.

:)
