Next Saturday, November 27, 2010, as part of Bridging the Gap I will be offering a Pecha Kucha presentaton (20 slides @ 20 sec each) on technology, the brain and our need to unplug. This presentation is based on recent research in response to ubiquitous access to information and the associated effects on our productivity and mental health. I am not an alarmist on this topic. As I write this, I have my laptop open, an iPad resting on my arm, and a blackberry blinking on the table next to me with mail waiting. I am nothing, if not connected… However as Joko Beck, author of Everyday Zen, reminds us,
Life always gives us exactly the teacher we need at every moment. This includes every mosquito, every misfortune, every red light, every traffic jam, every obnoxious supervisor (or employee), every illness, every loss, every moment of joy or depression, every addiction, every piece of garbage, every breath. Every moment is the guru.
Please join me next Saturday at YIS to explore together what this moment in the evolution of our relationship with technology has to teach us. My presentation is still coming together so please feel free to post an area of particular interest below and I will try to address it on Saturday. The event is open to all members of the YIS community and invited guests. Please contact the school or leave a reply here if you would like to attend. – A.C.
