CLC Technology Requirements

I don’t know how happy you are to finally have a 1:1 ratio of laptops to students but this has been something I’ve advocated for 5 years to see happen. Finally we can rely on everyone in the class having the tools they need for learning. While your computer came set-up with a lot of useful software there are four specific steps you need to take when you find yourself in a class with me.

Etiquette

The first is a bit on etiquette. We will operate in two primary modes: discussion mode and work mode. Every class will start in discussion mode so do not have your computer open at the start of class. This is our chance to set-up the class objectives, talk about questions that have come up, and begin to share new information. Generally speaking everything we discuss will be reinforced online anyway so you will be able to access this content without taking notes. After we have finished in discussion mode and we move into work mode you will most likely need your laptop.

Multi-tasking will not be tolerated in class. This is as hard for me as it is for anyone. I expect you to be focused on the content of our class and not trying to keep up with a sports event, make-up work you have due for another class, or socializing with friends on-line. Even after finishing work you were to do for our class, I do not expect you to start something unrelated just like I wouldn’t expect you to get up and walk out of class to do something else. Whether you actually get up and leave or virtually leave the room, really makes no difference. If you finish your work, see me about the next step rather than opening up youtube etc etc.

Google Groups

The first thing you need to confirm is that you have access to our google group. This will enable you to receive the email from the class and to participate in any online discussions we host on the google group discussion forum.

Grade 11 TOK is here - http://groups.google.com/group/2013-tok-clark
Grade 9 PSHE is here - http://groups.google.com/group/pshe-clark

Gmail Filter and Labels

The second thing you need to do is set-up a label/filter for all about this class. As mail comes in from the group it will have a tag in the subject that reads either [2012 TOK], [2013 TOK], or [PSHE]. By setting your filter to identify mail with that key term, all your mail about this class will be automatically organized.

Mailing Addresses

Add the appropriate mail address to your contacts from the 3 below. Direct all mail regarding the class to that email address (i.e. not to me personally). Chances are if you have a question about the course, other people have the same question. If you have a question for me that you don’t want shared with the class come find me and ask me your question.

Set-up your Class Blog

We will make frequent use of your blog for this class. If you are uncertain about how to set-up your blog go here.

Make sure you set up a section of your blog for your reflections so they are easy to find. This is usually done by creating categories or tags for this class.

Set-up a Diigo Account

Go to http://www.diigo.com/ and create your free account.

Then go and join the appropriate group. If you are new to Diigo have a look at this video.

Set-up a Twitter Account (TOK Classes Only)

We will be using Twitter in TOK so if you have a Twitter account that you want to use for class you are all set.

If you need an account click here and set one up.

Mr. Clark’s Class register your blog, Diigo page, and Twitter name here. After that post your definition of knowledge as your second blog post and you are finished.

Next time be ready to start using RSS to save heaps of time.
