Thanks for a great start to the year today. When I mentioned that your participation would really make a difference, the kind of approach you showed today was exactly the kind of atmosphere I hoped you’d bring to the class. The plan now is to spend the first unit together and then we may break up into our smaller classes. One of the things I mentioned today was the idea of health as a continuum.
The difference in this way of thinking is that often we discuss health as an “either/or” condition when, in reality, every living person’s health is in a state of constant flux. You might wake up in the morning feeling great but then a difficult interaction with a friend, followed by a poor mark on an assignment knocks you back a bit. The good mood and positive “healthy” attitude might fade in response to these events and all of a sudden you are not doing so well.
The same can be said for the other mental, physical, social domains you mentioned in class. If you think about it, none of us are either all healthy or unhealthy in any of those areas. What we do find, however, is that when we make an area a priority our position on the spectrum moves away from illness and toward a higher-level of wellness.
Have a good weekend and see you next week – A. Clark
