Your Parents Make You Smarter?!

Did you know your parents can help you get higher marks on both your presentation and your essay? It’s true… involving your parents in conversations about TOK and the kinds of topics we discuss in class will make you better informed, more articulate, and better able to use real-world examples to support your points and arguments.

This year you and your parents will be participating in Parent, Teacher, Student conferences and one of the outcomes of those discussions should be that your parents are better aware of what we do in TOK class so they can support you at home. This will help you do the absolute best you can in the course which is great news. What matters most for TOK is the content of your examples and the way in which you interpret and use them to address meaningful questions (aka knowledge issues). Your parents have years of experience doing just this!

Time – TOK takes time like any class. You have your blog to maintain and obviously the other tasks that come up during class and at various points in the course. What’s interesting is that it takes almost the same amount of time to prepare a mediocre presentation as it does to do an outstanding presentation. Think about it, you still have draft up how you are going to use the time in front of the class. The same thing goes for the essay. You still have to write the same number of words…Your parents can help you be better prepared for both of those tasks if you spend time talking together about current events or other global issues.

Getting Ready

By class next week open quicktime on your computer and make either a short video or audio recording of yourself answering the following questions and submit the file to me using my dropbox (click). The password is yis.clark (max file size is 75 mb so keep it light). See me with any questions.

On your recording – Give at least a 2 to 3 sentence answer for each of the following questions.

    • What have you done well?
    • What challenges have you faced?
    • What goals have you established?
    • Have you thought about what you can do to improve…?
    • How can I as your teacher help you?
    • What can your mother and father do to help you?

We will refer to these questions during the parent teacher conferences and also the work you have done for the course. Make sure your blog posts are all up to date. Grade 12 please be prepared to discuss your practice essay. Grade 11 make sure you are ready to discuss your practice presentation. – A. Clark
