Hi Adam,

I can't find the words to say how happy I was to read your post! I could see that you (and Kim in her comment) truly understand and appreciate the job of school librarians. What is also important to me, is to offer faculty and students a place "to chill out", where there is no grade and no stress and where each individual can work at its own pace. I am sad to hear about so many librarian positions being removed from schools, and I hope that it is just a trend, that the administrators will soon realize how much they lose doing so.
Thank you again, you made my day!

Agree with your simplicity and openness is best strategy. How do you employ it in all the spaces you occupy? Is there anything you do to ensure your brand is clear and present in your interactions? How do you make choices about what you post based on your brand? Has having this brand opened any unexpected opportunities (I assume it has based on your previous post).

It is interesting. I can understand how upset people feel when they think what they're seeing is being tailored to them based on their past interactions, but at the same time I appreciate a targeted ad much more than something completely unrelated to me. I remember when Gmail started up and everyone was in an uproar about how their new ads across the top were based on the text in the message. I was kind of excited about it. One of the things I love about the web is the concept of discoverability, and the way things can come to your attention on purpose by accident. I don't like the idea that I can become to comfortable in my own bubble of learning that the internet deems I will "like", but I also love getting customized content and being surprised by something so relevant. It's kind of a catch 22. It certainly will be interesting to see where things go.

Great summary of the concepts behind this week's reading. I also like to teach Creative Commons as a way for our students to be "discovered". So many of them are so creative (and so much more talented than I am, perhaps because they are so much younger), sharing their own work through Creative Commons, building an audience and finding their niche can be a way for them to develop a career path that may not have been possible a few years ago.

Great points about the importance of the library and the librarian. Totally agree. I also think they have other critical roles: to inspire a love of and passion for reading, to promote the use of the library as a collaborative learning space, to co-teach, as needed in the classroom or in the library units that focus on research skills. I'm sure I could think of more. Even though it seems an "easy" position to "remove", I would argue that it's one of the most crucial in schools, and it's sad to see how many schools around the world are removing the position entirely....

Love it! Love the comparison to the rail network here in Japan and your overall perspective. Couldn't agree more.

Love your point about serendipity. Totally agree - this is one of my favorite things about sharing. Just today I received an unexpected e-mail from the new Tech Coordinator at ASB Mumbai - he's not arriving until August 2012, and I've never met him, but he saw some of my presentations and made contact. Now I have another connection with someone at a school I respect, and I'll have a chance to meet him at the upcoming ASB Unplugged Conference (and I know his two other colleagues who will be arriving with him in August for the ES and HS positions, so I can help him out with connections too). Those types of serendipitous opportunities would never have presented themselves as frequently or easily if I wasn't so open about sharing online.

Yeah, some people, mainly children, underestimate the dangers of meeting other people online. From hackers, pedophiles, Identity theft to Internet gambling addiction, there are hundreds of possible risks. I know these kids won’t take it seriously, but they definitely should be given some kind of advice on how to keep their personal information private, etc.
